Nicki Jaine: Embracing the Darkness
One of those mysterious figures gliding through the local clubs clearly on her way to bigger and better, Nicki Jaine is holding the CD release party for her 11-song, Shaman Records CD, of pigeons and other curiosities, Monday, May 17 at Alchemy@CBGB Gallery, 313 Bowery, NYC.
Produced by Jason Rubal (Evensong) and featuring Hierosonic members Mike Stang (bass) and Mark Bohn (drums) with Rosemary Ostrowski on backing vocals and Jaine playing guitar and keyboards, the goth-by-default chanteuse employs a minimalistic musical approach and a big, bold Nico-meets-Marlene Deitrich voice on such songs as "Pretty Faces", "Sound of Girls" and the chaotic bad dream crash of "Octopi" that imbues each with a depth, darkness and drama that hits home.
