After touring this past fall as a member of black tape for a blue girl, Nicki Jaine and black tape founder Sam Rosenthal are working on a new collaboration. The new band has a dark cabaret sound and is sure to intrigue current fans of black tape and Nicki Jaine. A website full of pictures and MP3s plus a debut EP are coming in the near future. Nicki Jaine will participate in the staged reading of "Courting Mae West" at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City on February 9, where she will sing the opening song "Bye Bye Blackbird." Author LindaAnn Loschiavo's "Courting Mae West" covers the arrest, jailing, and legal aftermath surrounding the historic obscenity case. On February 9, 1927, Mae West was dragged out of her performance in the play "Sex" and arrested for obscenity. West was brought to the West Side Court where she was charged with obscenity and spent 10 days at the Women's Workhouse on Welfare Island. The staged reading will be preceded by an introductory discussion on censorship and Broadway during the 1926-1929 period. There will be a pre-show "Roaring '20s" costume party at the Village Restaurant (a former speakeasy) on January 17. Nicki Jaine and the entire cast of "Courting Mae West" will be in attendance. The party is by invitation only. Media are welcome.
