Torn Paper Dolls' Dark Dreams Come True
Philadelphia Nicki Jaine and Sky, creators of wickedly seductive and subtly scary dirges, are recording their first EP and have added drummer Zach Russell to their band, now called Torn Paper Dolls.
The addition of Philadelphia drummer Russell and the name change are part of Nicki Jaine and Sky's evolutionary goal toward achieving their performance vision. "The name Torn Paper Dolls conjures up an Edward Gorey/Tim Burton sort of dark imagery that we want to bring to the audience," says Jaine. "That imagery comes through in our music more than ever now. The contrast of our haunting songs and Zach's aggressive drumming dynamics is exactly what we've been searching for."
The EP is tentatively titled "Fireflies And Razorblades" and will be produced by musician/composer Chris Shepherd. Adding drums to their music has opened up more veins for Torn Paper Dolls' to explore. Jaine and Sky are trading vocal, guitar, bass and keyboard duties much more on the new and improved song arrangements. Sky calls this their "multi-instrumental switch-off coolness factor."
The EP will have 3 studio and 2 live tracks plus DVD footage from the band's upcoming show at CBGB on March 22. The show, headlined by Empire Hideous, will be filmed by Axis Films for a documentary called "Dynasty of Darkness". They are filming the entire night of performances as well as interviewing the bands for an in-depth look at dark music.
There is quite a bit of activity surrounding the band since Sky teamed up with Nicki in September 2002. The duo has been playing throughout the tri-state area as well as rehearsing with their new drummer and recording in between gigs. "When I first came across Nicki's website, and upon first listening to her songs, I was very intrigued and impressed," Sky says. "I had no idea that our twisted paths would cross. Everything seems to be going on the right track and I'm anxious and excited to have our EP finished."
After the New York show on March 22, Torn Paper Dolls will return to the studio to continue recording their EP, which will be released this summer.
